WOW! Just WOW! People—if you don’t already know how fortunate you are to live in this community, just let me tell you a story… Winters HS has been taking our juniors and seniors to the W.O.W. Conference (World of Work) in Abilene for the past several years. One of the highlights for our students has been the opportunity to participate in Mock Interviews. We prepare our students for the event by building resumes and business cards for portfolios, practicing job interview questions and communication skills, not to mention how to Dress for Success in appropriate business attire. To say we are the talk of the conference is an understatement. So, much to our dismay, when we arrived at the conference today, ready to impress, we experienced a HUGE letdown when we learned there would be NO Mock Interviews. None of us were aware they had done away with that portion of the conference, so I (Deb Pritchard) was particularly disappointed since our students had prepared so diligently for the past six weeks. So, while I’m put out and pouting, Mandie England and Danna Hoppe suggest, “let’s call some people and have them at the high school when we get home, and the seniors can interview there.” I personally didn’t think the idea would work, nor did I believe the students would want to stay in their business attire and participate, so I shunned the idea. However, they persisted, and within an hour, they had lined up 12 community members, businessmen and women from Winters, who were willing to help and give our students the opportunity to experience the interview process. Mandie, Danna, and Melissa Gerhart returned to the school, developed a list of interview questions to refer to, found and printed an interview rubric, secured rooms, and created and assigned an interview schedule. They proceeded to greet our panel of interviewers, usher them to rooms, then escort the students to their interviews. “Prospective employers” showed up at 2 pm, and by 3:15 pm, had interviewed 30 seniors and provided valuable feedback and constructive criticism! To top it off, the students were willing and eager to follow through with the process. An ENORMOUS THANK YOU goes out to Lisa Blake, Sue Prewit, Sherri Langston, Dinell Jacob, Paula Geyer, Jill Davis, Will Duggan, Doug Wheat, Heather Brown, Bill Bredemeyer, April Sweet, and Susan Conner. YOU ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! And THIS is the reason we LOVE Winters! No one said no to our request. Some could not help today but would have loved to. Many helped today and loved giving back to our community. Lots of places talk about giving back to your community-Winters DOES IT. Selflessly, willingly, generously, and at the spur of the moment. Lots of places give lip service to paying it forward, but the people who answered the call today would all tell you that others before them had helped them along the way. THANK YOU again, to ALL who made this happen. What started out as a disappointing situation, turned into a BLESSING in disguise. This is #whywinterstx!
