Auggie Woodruff with Woodruff Financial Planners in Ballinger spoke to students about budgeting, managing their money, and paying bills while CPA Will Ahrens discussed how to understand taxes (sales, income, and property).
Freshmen and sophomores learned how to manage high school from their presentations. WHS Counselor Mandie England discussed transcripts, GPAs, honors and dual credit courses, and programs of study. Technology teacher Melissa Gerhart spoke about the involvement and participation necessary to build an impressive resume and science teacher Beth Wortham walked students through the online Texas Reality Check involving a lifestyle calculator and an occupation calculator. WISD Curriculum Director Amy Flippin outlined goals and expectations for high school students at each grade level while Social Studies teacher Brandon Drake discussed all of the state/national tests to be taken while in high school (EOC, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, TSIA2, IBC exams) and the importance and purpose for each. Work Force Solutions liaison Sierra Wilson talked about post-secondary options from college to the workforce and all options in between to round out the morning.
Winters High School alum (2001) Colby Walker finished the day as keynote speaker presenting “Remember Who You Are and Where You’re From ”(the meaning behind those famous words) to discuss integrity, service, community responsibility, work ethic, and owning your rural, West Texas roots.
The program was the second in a series of financial literacy presentations sponsored by the Winters ISD EAF Grant Steering Committee. The committee wants to THANK all guest speakers and presenters for their willingness to serve our students in through this program. Your knowledge and support is greatly appreciated.

A huge shout-out to Coach Green for his unwavering dedication to education and his incredible impact on students' lives. He goes above and beyond to ensure that both his students and staff feel valued, appreciated, and supported. His commitment extends far beyond his title of principal—he happily serves also as a coach, bus driver, clock keeper, fundraiser organizer, confidant, and an active member of his church and the Lions Club.
Despite juggling so many roles, including being a devoted husband and father, he does it all with a smile. His hard work, long hours, and deep involvement in the community do not go unnoticed. Coach Green, your dedication and heart for others make a lasting difference—thank you for all that you do! Winters ISD is blessed to have you!

Reminder to Parents!!!
Winters High School will host a two-part financial literacy forum, beginning Wednesday, February 19, 2025. A parent program will be presented at 6 pm that evening in the WHS Library. High school parents should mark their calendars NOW for the event.
This presentation is designed to help parents navigate the complex process of college planning, financial aid, and alternative post-high school pathways with their students. Participants will gain valuable insights on how to support their students in making informed decisions about their futures, whether that involves attending college, exploring professional certification programs, or pursuing other career pathways. This session provides practical advice and resources to help parents feel confident in supporting their students through the important transition to life after high school. Paul Goebel, founder of the University of North Texas State Student Money Management Center, will be the keynote speaker.
Earlier in the day, juniors and seniors will rotate through breakout sessions to include: Post Secondary Options & Cost: University, small college, junior/community college, trade school, certifications, workforce; Post Secondary Education Costs vs. Job Income Return on Investment; Affordability: Financial Aid/
Scholarships/Grants/Work Study/Free Student Services; and an audience generated Panel Discussion.
Part two of the Financial Literacy Forum will be held on Friday, February 28 for all high school students. The second program will include financial breakout sessions for banking, payroll, taxes, order of operations, legal pitfalls, and consumer safety to name a few. These financial literacy programs are sponsored by the EAF Grant Steering Committee and funded through the 2024-2025 EAF Grant.
