School Sponsored Trips Students who participate in school sponsored trips are required to use transportation provided by the school to and from the event. As approved by the principal, a coach or sponsor of an extracurricular activity may establish procedures related to making an exception to this requirement when a parent requests that the student be released to the parent or to another adult designated by the parent.


The district makes school bus transportation available to all students living two or more miles from school. This service is provided at no cost to students. Bus routes and stops will be designated annually, and any subsequent changes will be posted at the school and on the district's Web site. For the safety of the operator of the vehicle and all passengers, students must board buses or other vehicles only at authorized stops, and drivers must unload passengers only at authorized stops. A parent may also designate a childcare facility or grandparent's residence as the regular pickup and drop off location for his or her child. The designated facility or residence must be on an approved stop on an approved route. For information on bus routes and stops or to designate an alternate pickup or drop off location, you may contact the campus principal. See below and refer to the Student Code of Conduct for provisions regarding transportation to the DAEP.

Riding to and from school on a W.I.S.D. vehicle is a privilege we are happy to extend to our students. The following procedures and policies are in place for the protection and safety of our passengers, it is strongly recommended that parents and riders familiarize themselves with these.

  • Students are expected to behave appropriately on the bus and at bus stops. All school rules of conduct apply to students being provided transportation. Additionally, students will be held responsible for acts of vandalism to W.I.S.D. property.
  • Obey the driver's instructions. Drivers are trained, certified, and licensed professionals. Acts or comments directed towards the driver/monitor of a disrespectful or insubordinate nature are prohibited.
  • Embark/disembark the vehicle only at your designated stop.
  • Stay in the seat reserved for you, unless directed to change by the driver/monitor.
  • Any object that would obstruct an emergency exit, access to an exit, prevent correct passenger seating, or obstruct the driver's view are prohibited on the bus. To the extent possible, band instruments MUST be small enough to sit in the students lap.
  • If an item drops or rolls near/under, the bus, do not attempt to retrieve it. Go to the door and ask the driver for help.
  • Do not chase, run after, or hang on the bus.
  • Parents are responsible for the transportation of a child that misses the bus.


Only eligible passengers are allowed on the bus, and only on the bus for their assigned route. If a student must ride a different bus, a parent needs to call the campus office. We will need the bus number, the name of the student they will be traveling with, and a phone number so we can verify this information .This will depend on availability of seats on the requested bus. REQUESTS TO RIDE A DIFFERENT BUS MUST BE APPROVED BY CAMPUS AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICES BEFORE GRANTED.

Parents are reminded that State Law prohibits boarding of the school bus by anyone other than registered students, Winters ISD personnel, or those persons authorized by Winters ISD.


Be at your bus stop 5 minutes before scheduled pickup time. Remain out of the street, and be respectful of the property owner's privacy and personal property where the stop is located. As the bus approaches, stay back away from the curb/street and the front wheel of the vehicle. Form a single file line and wait until the vehicle has come to a complete stop, and the driver has signaled for you to board. Board carefully and use the handrail. Do not push or shove, please be courteous, and move quickly to your reserved seating.


  • A particular seat was reserved for you at the beginning of the school year. If you need to change your seating arrangement, request and receive permission from the driver before you change seats. Remain in the seat, facing forward, and with all your body parts inside the bus and out of the aisle at all times. Do not attempt to stand in the aisle, or change from your seat to another while the bus is in motion.
  • Do not throw anything inside or outside the bus. Anything going outside of the window of the bus could result in a $500.00 fine from the police department and at least a 3 day suspension of the student's bus privileges.
  • Respect the rights of your fellow passengers. Do not harass others or touch their property.
  • The use of obscene, vulgar or profane language or gestures is prohibited.
  • Fighting or other acts of violence perpetrated against fellow passengers are strictly forbidden. This act will result in an automatic 5 day suspension of all students' involved bus privileges. If it is suspected that behavior has become criminal, it will be reported upon arrival at the campus; if the behavior is such, as to inhibit the safe operation of the bus, law enforcement officers will be called to assist.
  • Normal conversation is encouraged however, please do not shout, or participate in any activity that may distract the driver.
  • Marking on the bus or cutting bus seats is considered vandalism, and is destruction of public property. The student responsible will be held responsible for the cost of the repairs and could result in bus suspension.
  • No eating or drinking on the bus. The only exception will be plain water ( no sugar, non-flavored, etc.) allowed in a clear plastic bottle during the hot weather.
  • Do not attempt to operate any driver controls or emergency exit, except in an extreme emergency, or during an authorized drill. This is a major safety violation and an automatic bus suspension will follow.


When the bus arrives at your campus, remain seated. The driver will release passengers by seat, at which time you may stand, gather your items, and exit the bus using the handrail. Step down carefully and walk directly away from the vehicle. Never walk along the side of the bus or within 3 feet of the rear tires.

If you have to cross the street, move in front of the bus to make eye contact with the driver and wait for the driver to signal it is safe to cross. Look both ways before crossing the street. Never cross behind the bus, cross at an intersection if available, and watch out for people that don't stop for the bus!


  • Tobacco products
  • Live animals or insects
  • Glass containers
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Weapons (knives, guns, any explosive device) and harmful drugs or chemicals
  • Any item too large for the student to carry and keep at their seat
  • Matches or lighters
  • Unwrapped/opened food & beverage packages/containers (see rule about water)
  • Skateboards, toys, or any item prone to creating a disturbance, not directly related to school academic activities*
  • *If in doubt about a particular item, please call transportation.


1. Follow the driver's instructions at all times.
2. The student nearest the door will open the door and hold it open for others.
3. The students seated nearest the door will exit first.
4. Exit the bus in single file as quietly and orderly as possible.
5. When instructed to leave the area of the bus, do so in a group.


Bus rider rules apply to all school sponsored events.


It is the Transportation department's desire to provide a safe and comfortable experience for every passenger to enjoy. Student conduct rules are the same for the bus as they are for the campus. Bus conduct reports are utilized for student behavior on the bus.

W.I.S.D. has no provision, or obligation, to provide transportation for passengers that have lost their bus privileges due to misconduct. The parents of the student will have to make arrangements for the child's transportation for the remainder of the suspension period, whether temporary or permanent. We realize this could create additional family hardships; therefore, it cannot be stressed enough, the importance of adhering to conduct rules.

By accepting transportation on a W.I.S.D. vehicle you are consenting to video recording for administrative purposes. In the event a serious incident occurs, video tape, if available, will be retained and segments may be provided to the campus administrator upon request. Due to legal concerns, the data on the tape is considered confidential, and will not be released outside the campus/department without the appropriate legal document

The ride to and from school is the most dangerous part of the student's day. There will be NO TOLERANCE for passengers that are willing to put their own safety, and the safety of those around them at risk. Violators will be dealt with swiftly and severely in accordance with school board policy.
